In her
years as a practitioner, Dr. Harpham
worked hard to understand how to nurture
healing doctor-patient relationships.
The design of her office and her
approach to patients reflected the
blending of high-tech medicine with
old-fashioned caring.
But it
was in the setting of her own
vulnerability, pain, loss and fear as a
cancer patient that she first
appreciated the breadth and depth of
everyday difficulties endured by
patients. She’s been exploring and
discussing healing doctor-patient
relationships ever since.
In
December 2005, Dr. Harpham was invited
to write a column for professionals. Her
Oncology Times column, “View
From the Other Side of the Stethoscope,”
received the 2007 Silver Medal from
American Society of Healthcare
Publications, category “Regular
Column-contributed.”
Each
column grapples with one common yet
rarely-discussed patient dilemma, such
as the problem of false alarms or the
difficulty of finding hope in the
setting of incurable disease. Dr.
Harpham offers insight into the dynamics
behind each problem. She concludes with
suggestions for her colleagues in
oncology, offering examples of healing
words and actions that may only take a
few seconds but make a world of
difference for patients.
These
columns are addressed to professionals
in oncology, yet they have been
circulating among patients. Survivors
and their families appreciate the
insight into the world of their doctors
and nurses. Many patients find the
stories and advice help them reflect on
their lives as survivors.
View
From the Other Side of the Stethoscope
opens their eyes to new opportunities
for hope and healing.
